Miles poked his head out the Inn’s side door and looked left, then right. Dang it, he’d just heard Kayla and Brent out here a few minutes ago. Where could they have gone?
He stepped out onto the flagstone path and followed it around to the front. Kayla had been deadheading perennials earlier in the day, maybe she’d gotten her fill of flirting with his cousin and gone back to work. As soon as that thought entered his mind, though, Miles dismissed it with a shake of his head—those two couldn’t ever seem to get enough of each other. It was cute and disgusting all at the same time.
Bleah.
Sure, Kayla was a heck of an attractive woman. Smart, too. And funny, and persistent. But since she was also the first woman to catch Brent’s eyes in almost a decade, Miles had quickly abandoned pursuing her. Instead, he’d adopted Kayla as a bit of a surrogate little sister—always bantering back and forth with her. She’d grown up with a brother of her own, so the girl knew how to give as well as take when it came to teasing.
In fact, she reminded him of Stephanie in that respect. Though, if Kayla was stubborn, Steph had been ten times so. How Liam had ever convinced her to pack up and leave Michigan a year before graduation was beyond him. Not only did that mean throwing her degree down the drain, she’d also had to move away from her family. And she’d been big time into her family from what he could remember. Maybe it was one of those “true love can make you blind” kind of things.
Miles wouldn’t know, he’d never found it. Nor had he ever tried looking.
He rounded the front right corner of the Inn and finally found Kayla…sandwiched between his horny cousin and the lemon yellow siding.
“Okay, seriously you two. Is that what I’m paying you for?”
Brent grinned but kept his lips pressed to Kayla’s bare shoulder—that boy always did have a tank top fetish. From the look on her face, she didn’t mind it one bit.
“Wait—you mean some of the people around here actually get paid?” …
